How volunteers help.
We could not run our Sanctuary without the help and support of our volunteers!
Animal areas like paddocks and coops need to be cleaned, buckets washed, water refilled, hay restocked, bedding cleaned up and refreshed, shelters and fences built or repaired. There is always a lot to do!
Volunteer applications.
Volunteering with The Alice Sanctuary is physically demanding, but very rewarding work. It is a great way to connect with the residents and build community with other like-minded people. We are always looking for more volunteers and would love for you to join us! Previous farm animal experience is not required.
Our Volunteer Program runs on Saturdays from 10am-4pm. Each volunteer will go through one Orientation Day, after which we ask for a commitment of one Saturday per month.
NOTE: Volunteer orientations are on hold through the summer while we host our tours, so keep an eye on our social media for when applications reopen.
Volunteer Expectations:
Please note, while you do not have to be vegan to volunteer, we are a vegan environment, so volunteers are expected to adhere to the following:
No animal products are to be worn at the sanctuary (ie. fur, leather products [gloves, boots, shoes], down, wool, sheepskin, Canada Goose apparel, Uggs, etc)
All food brought in must be animal-product free (ie. no meat, dairy, eggs, gelatin, etc)
We ask for a volunteer commitment of one Saturday per month
Volunteer responsibilities:
Be alert and respectful of the animals’ intentions, signalled with their ears, eyes, body, head, teeth and hooves
Speak and move in a calm, consistent, and confident way when approaching an animal(s)
Avoid sudden movements or noises
Follow all orientation directions for approaching and working around the individual animals
NEVER leave animals unattended with gates left open
Always wear appropriate clothing including durable shoes or muck boots
Pick up and replace all tack and equipment used
Not smoke on or around the premises (fire hazard)
Read all posted information and warnings
Recognize that I am part of a team and will respect what all team members have to offer
Be willing to share knowledge/experience with team members and look for opportunities to learn from other team members
Listen to all verbal directions from TAS staff and volunteer coordinators for both your safety of that of the animals
Refrain from acting in any manner which may cause or contribute to injury of self, others, or the animals
ANYONE found to be disrespecting and/or endangering themselves and/or other people and/ or residents will face IMMEDIATE revocation of their volunteer privileges WITHOUT EXCEPTION as well as prompt removal from the property.
